Memories of Taipei
Why did you create it?
I created this postcard painting project “Memories of Taipei 🇹🇼”.
I drew inspiration from the sights, sounds and experience of my time in Taipei, Taiwan. By recording my experience through black and white postcard paintings I sought to unravel memory. Have you ever wondered which part of your memory is real and which part is unreal? My mission was to investigate this by bringing my own interpretation and imagination to my observations. The circle, a motif I often use in my art is also present. It creates anther point of focus and also signifies a crossing over of realities and seems to emit its own light. I also only worked in black and white colour. I wanted to convey a dreamy atmosphere of light and dark and it's also referenced to old black and white photographs as for me it often signify a moment in the past.
Importantly I would like you to bring your own experience and interpretation to this project. I would like it to speak to you in your own way.
What materials and techniques were used?
For this project I only worked with black and white acrylic paint on water colour paper. I then applied gloss medium to the surface. It's like a glaze to a ceramic surface, it liquifies the colour. It also helps to prolong the longevity of the painting by reducing discounting over time.
Were can I place it in my space?
This painting would look nice placed in your home or office. With small paintings you can either place it in a small space like a hallway or office. I also think it works well in a bigger space like a lounge as the painting pops off the wall with its vivid colours and invites you to come closer to look at the details.
