Market Life: Bringing art to the Streets
Markets, I started getting serious about doing markets from March 2025. I was eger to put my work out there and introduce people to my creations. I realised there is only so much I can do online and I always find putting my work in real spaces connects to people more.
I started out by doing local village markets, then slowly worked my way to the city.
What is at the Market?
At markets I often take my handmade ceramic tableware from the Artful Living Range
On display you will find items like mugs, jugs spoon rests and ceramic jawarey and more. Fun fact my tableware started out as being called Bubbleware as I would often put these bubble like features in the pottery! Then more recently the name has shifted to Martin Harman Art to become part of the whole thing of creations I make.
I like to think that they are small artworks in themself, art for the table and art to wear.
They all all handmade by myself. The tableware is made on the potters wheel from stoneware clay. I often multi glaze my work in a variety of glazes as I enjoy seeing the effects of how the glazes react with each other. Each piece is high fired in an electric kiln to 1230c. What I like about going to high temperatures is the depth of colour that can be achieved, I find this fascinating. As well as how the glazes drips down the sides and creates some colourful results. I am always eager to open the kiln to see the results of the making. There is a magic to it and this excites me. Being high fired and made from Stoneware means the tableware is also heat resistant and can be placed in the oven and microwave making it convenient for heating or reheating foods or liquids.
What Market Can I find your Work At?
At the moment I am mainly focusing on Bristol indies Market on Corn Street and Wine Street here in the UK.
Why Markets?
What I like about markets is meeting all sorts of people and the conversations. I have learned so much from just listening to people stories and perspectives and on life. Its been an eye opener. Being in the city I see a lot of different things every day.
What also makes markets unique is that they are essentially small shops were you can often find unique handmade items. You also get to talk to the creator of the things made. This does not really happen when you go to a shopping centre. Therefore their is often a connection to the person making the object you don't get any ware else.
